1996 wurde der Filmverleih Real Fiction von Joachim Kühn mit dem Ziel gegründet, Dokumentarfilme und Filmkunst in Deutschland ins Kino zu bringen. In Anlehnung an andere Genrebezeichnungen wie etwa
Science Fiction will der Verleih vor allem Dokumentarfilme ins Kino bringen, die ihre Themen mit allen erzählerischen Mitteln des Kinos vermitteln wollen. Real Fiction hat über 80 Dokumentarfilme und einige Spielfilme veröffentlicht – jährlich kommen zehn bis zwölf Titel hinzu. Neben dem Verleih leitet Joachim Kühn zusammen mit Dirk Steinkühler auch die Filmpalette in Köln und die Kino Gesellschaft Köln als Agentur für
Filmevents. Real Fiction wurde 2010 mit dem Verleiherpreis des BKM ausgezeichnet und 2012 von der DEFAStiftung für herausragendes Verleihprogramm geehrt.
